Here's where to start searching for that big tom.

Attention to dozens of details goes into successful spring turkey hunting. And one of the most important, yet often overlooked, aspects of bagging a big bird is beginning right. You may have a vest full of choice, well-tuned calls, the best camouflage money can buy, and a shotgun that patterns deadly at 40 yards. But unless you begin your hunt with care in choosing just the right spot from which to call, your goose is cooked before a turkey leaves his roost.

The following 10 perfect calling sites have been selected by hunters who have witnessed first-hand how ideal these locations are for drawing a tom into shotgun range. Not every turkey hunting spot will have a calling site exactly like the ones described here. But by identifying some of the key points of why these spots are prime for taking turkey, you'll be well on your way to locating similar places on your home hunting turf - and hopefully filling turkey tags, too.

5 Field-Calling Sites:

1) Creekside Field Edge One great spot for drawing birds to a field within shotgun range is available in much of gobbler country. Look for a field with a perimeter creek within 100 yards of the edge of the planted ground. Turkeys often roost near creeks, between the draw and field.

Such places are plentiful in woods-fringe farm country, as farmers plow ground near creeks but leave cover alongside streams because it's not suitable for planting.
