The Deserts region of California has some of the hottest average temperatures in the state and gets its name from the Sonoran Desert, Great Basin Desert and the Mojave Desert areas. Some of the most well known destinations are the Joshua Tree National Park, Death Valley National Park and the Mojave National Preserve. Joshua Tree National Park is known for its unusual rock formations, camping, and photography opportunities, while the Death Valley National Park is known for Titus Canyon, the salt flats, and the lowest point in the United States.

Two other nearby spots are Mount Rubidoux for bouldering and the Santa Ana River that flows at the base of the mountain that makes the boundary between the city of Riverside and Rubidoux neighborhood. In Imperial County you can visit the Algodones Sand Dunes famous for off road vehicles, ATVs, and 4 wheelers. Additionally, Imperial County is home to the Salton Sea, a shallow saline lake located on the San Andreas Fault. The surface of the lake is 234 feet below sea level.
