Established in 1883, this farming village is located on the historic Mackinac Trail. Rudyard has a rich history of farming, timbering, and railroads. About 20 miles to the north is Sault Ste. Marie which was founded in 1668, and is one of the oldest European settlements in North America. This vibrant northern city is strategically located on the south bank of the St. Mary?s River at what has been called ?the hub of the Great Lakes.? The St. Mary?s River itself is a significant world waterway, connecting Lake Superior to Lakes Huron and Michigan. A series of canals and locks ? the Sault Locks ? were built in 1855 to move ships around the Rapids - the 21 foot difference between the two uneven lake levels. Some freighters - up to 1,000 feet long - negotiate the narrow channels and are worth seeing! A few miles to the east is access to thousands of acres of Munuscong State Forest Lands. A little further, (about 10-Miles) to the east of the property is beautiful Munuscong Lake, which is part of the deep water channel separating the United States and Canada. It is known for Walleye and Perch concentrations! Ten miles to the south are the beautiful shores of Lake Huron and the Les Cheneaux Islands, an archipelago of 36 islands that The Nature Conservancy recognizes as One of the Last Great Places in the Western Hemisphere. Woods and Water Eco-tours offers guided birding, hiking, biking and sea kayaking trips in waters that are ideal for paddling here. Just a short drive to the south-west of the property is St. Ignace, the Mackinac Bridge gateway to the U.P. This city dates to 1671, and is located on a small harbor just north of the Straits of Mackinac on Lake Huron. Here is a wild bird sanctuary, home to swans, egrets, herons, and hundreds of ducks, that live at the base of the Mackinac Bridge. It is not uncommon to see an osprey diving for fish or a majestic bald eagle soaring across sky. The property is conveniently located just a few miles off Interstate-75. This interstate is a part of the Interstate Highway System that runs from Miami, Florida, to Sault Ste. Marie in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The parcel is gently rolling, with mostly open fields which appear to be suitable for hay crop. There is a wooded area at the north end of the property where a tributary of the Munuscong River is located. There are many miles of fencing around much of its perimeter. On a County maintained road, there is electricity and telephone available. If you are seeking an area to enjoy and be able to drink in the scenic beauty of the countryside, the lakeshores, fields, forests and picturesque historic villages be sure to check this property out!
