More Information About Front Range Region, CO

The Front Range region of Colorado is a mountainous area filled with state parks, vast lakes, and all sorts of outdoor mountain activities. Bordering the state of Wyoming, the Colorado Front Range is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park and is reason enough to travel and see this enormously picturesque region. The Rocky Mountain National Park is a 415-square-mile natural wonderland outside Estes Park that offers majestic peaks, forests, meadows, and tundra along with a legendary scenic byway and epic wildlife viewing. Inside the massive park you will find rock climbing, many lakes for fishing, several campgrounds, and trails for hiking and backpacking like the Fern Lake Trail which leads to many waterfalls and other fantastic views.

Boulder County, Larimer County and Weld County offer some of the richest agricultural and ranching land in the state. These counties all benefited from The Colorado Big Thompson Project that captured water from the Western Slope and carried it to the counties which extended the growing season and added additional land to be farmed.

Additionally, Weld County lies within the relatively flat eastern portion of Colorado; the northeastern portions of the county contain the extensive Pawnee National Grassland and the Pawnee Buttes. Activities including camping are available at the Crow Valley Recreation Area northwest of Briggsdale. The grassland contains several hiking trails, including one that allows foot access to the Pawnee Buttes, the most notable geologic feature of the Grasslands. Bird watching is a popular recreational activity for day hikers, especially at the Chalk Bluffs, a raptor nesting site.
