It encompasses 470 square miles of watershed and is approximately 61.5 miles long. It flows through seven counties including the Conecuh National Forest.

Although it is described as a river, it only lends itself to small flat bottom boats such as jon boats, canoes, or paddle type boats. There are areas of the river that barely move to areas that are considered class I rapids. With unusually clear water, it is considered one the cleanest river systems in Alabama. Although that is great for the environment and viewing, it does pose a challenge for the fisherman. With such clear water, it makes it a challenge for anglers who try their luck with the multiple species of fish. Whether you like to fish for largemouth bass, bluegill, the Alabama spotted bass or a shadow bass, they are all waiting.
