Historical operation of this ranch has been to graze yearling livestock from mid-April through October. Grama and buffalo grass production has been superb this season. Primary hunting on the ranch consists of pronghorn antelope and mule deer. The ranch received 2 landowner authorizations for buck pronghorn antelope from Game and Fish in 2017. Mule Deer hunting is available on the south portion of the ranch. Owners have noted that elk have been seen on occasion on the south portion of the ranch.
Terrain on the ranch varies from open prairies on the north 4,300 +/- acres to moderate rolling terrain and steeper pion juniper hillsides on the southern portions of the ranch. The terrain on the south allows an owner to vary livestock production to either yearlings or a cow/calf operation with the added protection of draws and tree cover during winter storm season. Elevations on the ranch vary from 5,100 to 5,500 +/- ft.
The ranch is fenced into 9 pastures and 2 traps. Interior and exterior fencing is comprised of four and five strand barb wire. New swing gates are found on the north portion of the ranch. County roads and two track roads provide easy access to all pastures on the ranch. Fencing is functional and is considered to be in fair-good condition.
The primary water sources consist of 4 solar powered wells with submersible pumps, 2 windmills, and 3 springs. Underground pipelines service drinkers at well locations and in strategic locations within the ranch. There is one main storage tank located on the state trust land. Today, large ranch ownerships in Harding County consists of the vast 290,000 acre Bell Ranch, the Tequesquite, and F and F Cattle Company.
Not to be overlooked are the aesthetics of the Deer Canyon Ranch. Approximately 60 miles to its west lies the beautiful Sangre de Christo Range. Its snowcapped peaks are spectacular in winter months. Recreational access to Angel Fire, Taos, Eagle Nest, and Red River are easy from the Deer Canyon Ranch.
Mosquero and Roy, New Mexico are the closest communities near the Deer Canyon Ranch. Roy has a small community grocery-hardware store, and a fuel station. Mosquero is the county seat for Harding County. There is a restaurant in both communities, and these communities have active school districts for families with smaller children.
