New Iberia, in the heart of Evangeline Country, is known for its spectacular plantation homes lining Bayou Teche, such as the celebrated 19th century landmark of The Shadows, and in this case, a gem from another period . . . from what we now refer to as Mid Century Modern, which is about a half mile from The Shadows
665 E. Main is not only prized for its quality and design but also recognized for its stunning setting on just over four and half acres with frontage on Main Street as well as onto placid, manicured, and navigable Bayou Teche. It was completely renovated in 2012 by the present owners.
Its low-pitched roof, one story height, and lots of glass aspect reminds of the architectural forms introduced a century ago by Frank Lloyd Wright and which persist in many of our styles today . . . . because they work.

Convenience and efficiency are words that dominate in describing 665. The carport provides covered access immediately adjacent to the kitchen . . . and all of the functional aspects are located at what might be described as this entertaining or living end of the house which focuses around a huge living room and open kitchen. The terrazzo floors are spectacular; the walk-in pantry, mud room, and laundry areas are all extremely well planned and executed.
Throughout the house there are great views of the sweeping lawns, gardens, and the understated pool area. The house is on a slight rise centrally set on 4 acres above the beautifully manicured Bayou . with views as well of the nicely done city playground area across the Bayou from 665.
A foyer and living room separate the living end from the two-bedroom wings, each providing lots of windows for the five bedrooms. The master bedroom wing uses one of the bedrooms as part of the master suite. It is luxurious.
The other wing has one wonderful guest room with an en-suite bathroom and another two bedrooms with what is often referred to as a Jack & Jill bathroom shared between them. Everywhere there are storage delights, built-ins, and ample closets . . . many of them walk-ins.
