The majority of the Northern region of New York is covered by the Adirondack Mountains which are contained in the Adirondack Park. The park consists of 6.1 million acres of both public and private protected land making it America's largest wilderness preserve outside of Alaska.
The Adirondack Park contains thousands of lakes and streams with the most famous being Lake Placid in Essex County, Lake George in Warren County and Saranac Lake in Franklin County. The lakes, rivers, and streams are filled with large trout and black bass. While fishing and hunting are allowed in the park there are strict regulations on both. Bear hunting and deer hunting are the choice for hunters in the area mainly due to the hilly terrain.
Whitewater and flatwater canoeing or kayaking are very popular throughout the park. Lake Placid is a perfect winter getaway in the region with Whiteface Mountain which is one of highest peaks in the Adirondack Mountains. The ski resort offers some of the best downhill skiing, snowboarding, and cross country skiing the region.
West of Adirondack Park is the Thousand Islands region which is on the Canada and United States border in Saint Lawrence River. The river emerges from the northeast corner of Lake Ontario and stretches across Oswego County, Jefferson County, and Saint Lawrence County.
