Terrain: The ranch is uniquely situated astraddle the Callahan Divide. This is the Great Divide of the State of Texas that separates the Colorado River system from the Brazos and its tributaries. The elevation of 2,550 ft. above sea level, and an absence of humidity and annoying insects, create a most pleasant desert climate. The terrain is about an even mixture of open flat country and broken brushy draws and hillsides. Recreation: Activities on the ranch are almost unlimited: Miles and miles of two-track trails provide opportunities for adventure on horseback, four wheelers, ATVs, and bikes, as well as for hikers and joggers. Shooting opportunities include rifle and pistol ranges and sporting clays for the wing shots. The ranchs participation in the state MLD program allows an individual licensed hunter to harvest any number of Whitetail deer over and above the countys prescribed limit until the MLD tags are exhausted. Golfers need not hold back. The full-length driving range can contain the longest drive. Golfers can also perfect their putting strokes on the poolside green. As the temperature rises, so does the popularity of the plunge pool. West Texas is host to a spectacular array of bird life. Quiet time around the lodge is sometimes spent with jigsaw puzzles and board games, but some may choose to make a selection from the ranchs impressive thousand plus volume library, highlighting Texas, the Southwest, and the Wild West of times gone by. The Barbeque Joint is the perfect place for swapping stories and having a beverage or two. Explorers of all ages cherish the thrill of searching for and finding shed horns, fossils, and arrowheads to add to the ranch artifact collection. The Paleo Wheel: this outdoor display of stone artifacts, all discovered on ranch property, were left by North Americas most ancient people: The Mammoth Hunters. We continue to add to this collection from what is, apparently, a vast trove of prehistoric tools used by the Paleo Indians 8,000 to 11,000 years ago. In the center of the wheel are 66 round baked clay balls that range in size from smaller than a plum to larger than a softball. These curious objects are not particularly rare as they are found all over the Americas. However, this is among the largest collections of the balls ever found at one site. The balance of the objects displayed are scrapers, pre-forms, hand axes, shaft shapers, choppers and hammer stones. Inside the lodge is an assemblage of smaller artifacts composed of beautiful bi-faced clear forks, intricate dart shapers, knives, delicate turtleback scrapers, grinders, wood planes, spear points, and a vast array of atlatl (dart) points, including a rare Folsom point.
