The Coast region of North Carolina has over 300 miles of barrier island beaches with quaint towns up and down the coastline. There are three sections of the coast that include the Outer Banks, the Crystal Coast, and the inland. At the northern part of the coast lies the Outer Banks which are barrier islands that separate the Atlantic Ocean from the mainland. Roanoke Island was the first English colony in the New World and now it is a popular beach vacation destination. Surfers delight in the incredible waves on Hatteras Island which is the southernmost island in the Outer Banks.

The Crystal Coast has more than 56 miles of protected beaches from Cape Lookout National Seashore to New River. Two popular activities in the area are diving and fishing because of the Gulf Stream that creates near perfect conditions for both. People come to the Crystal Coast to catch marlin, yellowfin tuna, trout and, bass. Many people make the Crystal Coast and the coastal beach towns like Beaufort and Atlantic Beach their home away from home.

Further inland are North Carolina's oldest towns, Bath in Beaufort County and New Bern in Craven County. The Croatan National Forest is also in the region and offers a variety of recreation and wildlife. The blackwater creeks and saltwater marshes are great for canoeing and fishing. The Hunter Shelter Game Land in Pender County is over 60,000 acres of land for hunting deer, bear, and turkey. Hunting is only available half the year, so the rest of the year the land is used for hiking and camping.
