Soils/Topography/Forage: The uplands support a mix of both Tallgrass Prairie forages and Cross Timbers vegetation with introduced forages on the bottom land soils of Bird Creek and its tributaries.

The Cross Timbers grasses are represented by big bluestem, indian grass, switchgrass and little bluestem to name just a few of the major Tallgrass species. Prairie acacia, leadplant, showy partridge pea, Illinois bundle flower, roundhead lespedeza and slender lespedeza are just a few of the native legumes. Maximilian and ashy sunflower, prairie coneflower, pitcher sage, and several gayfeather varieties are representative of the native forbs, all of which provide outstanding habitat for our native wildlife species including deer, turkey and quail.

The Bird Creek bottom and its tributaries will sustain red oak, bur oak, chinquapin oak, pecan, black walnut, sycamore and river birch for just a partial list of species represented.

These plants, and many others, are important ingredients of the diverse ecological balance of the Cross Timbers ecosystem. These ingredients contribute to the livestock grazing and wildlife habitat in this area of Oklahoma.

Wildlife and Recreation: The ability to own a secluded piece of this unique Osage County ecosystem is the ultimate recreation for many. The topography and wildlife habitat within this major riparian area is second to none. This area of Osage County has consistently produced outstanding deer and turkey hunting.

Deer, turkey, quail and other game animals such as squirrel, raccoon, coyote and rabbit are abundant. The varied non-game population will include eagles and other woodland and prairie bird species. Red and grey foxes and bobcats may also be spotted in this habitat.

Water: It is always beneficial when one of the strongest values of a property is the water. Bird Creek is a major riparian area in the county that provides the water source for Bluestem Lake and eventually empties into the Verdigris River. It provides excellent largemouth bass, sand bass and catfishing opportunities, just to name a few. The water course is deep enough to launch small fishing boats and go for miles both upstream and downstream. Osage County has an annual rainfall of approximately 38.
