HISTORICAL RECORD STATES: from Ottawa Historical Society:
THE DAWES COMMUNITY (located originally on Cedar Ridge)
Dawes City | Dawes Commission | Native Lands
"They called it Dawes, and sometimes Timber Hill. There was a trading post, a post office, a school and it was the home of a number of Cherokee families who had taken land in the area for allotments. The location is six miles west of Miami on a tree-crowned hill that breaks the prairie flatness into a welcome landmark. But first the hill was known only to a few trail riders, and wandering Indians, and possibly outlaws. For a long time after the Cherokees had claimed it in a long-ago treaty, it was just that a landmark.
The hill may have resulted from a cataclysmic up heaval of nature long before any man knew this region. It flung ton-sized boulders about like toys and left smaller stones on the surface so that those who found it later could make stone fences with them. A spring of sparkling water sprang from hidden depths to comfort man and beast. It is still there.
The history of the Dawes settlement is intimately involved with descendants of a group of five McGhee brothers, Scotch-Irish in descent, who had come from Georgia in 1835 with the Cherokees and intermarried with them."

Miami, Indian Territory
"DAWES, (where is DAWES?) is in the garden spot of Indian Territory, located seven miles west of Miami and six mile east of Welch, on what is known as Timber Hill. We have several fine springs on the hill, and are drilling for oil or gas as we have the finest prospects in Indian Territory for both. We also have two 14-inch veins of coal already, and our drill men say, Without a doubt we will reach something better. People come to Dawes for health, wealth and happiness. In the near future we will have our little town advertised abroad. Our little town is owned by four citizens, who will give any man a chance to enjoy that farther happiness. We are to have a railroad as soon as the route is surveyed, and the charter granted. Our farmers are almost done plowing and planting corn. We also have a fine national school, which is well attended and will soon have daily mail from Miami to Welch. J.M. McGhee now conducts a general merchandise store, and he is doing a rushing."
Local legend has it that the notorious Ma Barker and her outlaw sons were at times hiding in the caves on Timber Hill in the early 1900s!
