The farm dates back to 1743. Upon approach, the barn first catches your eye. Typical in size for the time period, it measures 44 x 82. The main level shows evidence of being a milking barn, as most were in the day. Whitewash still covers sections, the main aisle is at ground level with an earthen ramp and is wide enough for buggies. The lofts have been reconfigured here and there. Underneath the barn on the back side it is wide open, allowing one to check the structure from here and have great garden storage or livestock cover.
Attached to the barn is an ell that was once the carriage shed. On slab, it now houses a charming 1,100 s/f two-level, four room apartment. The living room/dining area and awesome kitchen are on the ground level and two bedrooms and a full bath are up, partially built into a rear section of the main level of the barn.
The house at Marston Farm is an early example of a half colonial with its front door and staircase tucked to one side. It has been altered over the years but retains the bones and character that all antique lovers cherish. There are 3 fireplaces, although only one is in use now with a woodstove insert into a lined flue. This one is in the living room. Theres one in the kitchen, and the other in the front parlor. The kitchen is minimalist but very functional and leads to a newer and well-designed mudroom/bath/laundry area accessible via the back door. From here, a restful, newer enclosed porch sits just feet from the farm pond. Its use is extended spring and fall by a woodstove.
Heading upstairs, find a roomy landing with built-ins and attic access. The front bedroom over the parlor below is large and bright and has an en suite half bath. There are two back bedrooms with rich old paneling and newer closet storage. A full bath completes this level.
This is the ideal farmstead in a lovely and historic area. Youll want to update the electrical system in the main house but everything is very livable and oh so charming. This is a rare find in that you can either continue to lease the detached unit or live there while completing work on the property. Not ready to move just yet? Purchase the property, keep the excellent tenants to watch over things and move here when its time. Your options are many.
