Hinton is the county seat of Summers County. Hinton was established in 1873 and chartered in 1897, and was named after John Jack Hinton, the original owner of the town site. Much of Hintons downtown was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

There are several museums in Hinton, including the Veterans Memorial Museum, the Hinton Railroad Museum, and Kings Civil War Museum. The City of Hinton is currently restoring the CSX passenger depot and the Freight Depot to be used as possible tourist draws in the future.

The Bluestone Dam was completed in 1949 and along came the Bluestone Public Hunting and Fishing Area and Bluestone State Park.

City of Hinton Parks and recreation department has a water park complete with a water slide and swimming pool. They also have a 10,000 sq ft public fitness center.

Amtrak, the national passenger rail service, provides service to Hinton under the Cardinal route. CSX owns the rail line through Hinton, which is the mainline of the former Chesapeake and Ohio Railway.

Part of Paramounts 1994 film Lassie was shot in Hinton.

THE AREA

Home to the Bluestone Lake, and just minutes to Sandstone Falls, Bluestone State Park, and Pipestem Resort, the surrounding area offers unlimited soft recreational activities including white water rafting, golfing, fishing, camping, hiking, bird watching and rock climbing. Snow skiing at the Winterplace Resort is less than an hour away. In minutes you can catch the Amtrak train in Hinton and ride to the Greenbrier Resort, Chicago or New York City. The Beckley Airport is just 30 minutes away. The new 10,000 acre Boy Scout high adventure camp is an hours drive and the 14,000 acre Wildlife Management Area is just across around the corner at Bull Falls.

The New River is the second oldest river in the world, preceded only by the Nile; it is the oldest river in North America. The New River is unique because it begins in Blowing Rock, N.C. and flows north through Virginia into West Virginia. The Nile and Amazon are the only other major rivers that also flow north. Year after year, it produces more citation fish than any other warm water river in WV. Small-mouth bass, large-mouth bass, crappie, catfish, sunfish, hybrid striped bass, and muskie are all common species of fish found in the New River and Bluestone Lake.

Bluestone Lake is over 2000 acres at summer pool and is the states third largest body of water. Great hunting and fishing opportunities abound at the 17,632 acre Bluestone Wildlife Area adjacent to the park and nearby Camp Creek State Forest.
