The Eastern region of Tennessee is considered part of Appalachia and is home to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in America. The park straddles between the North Carolina and Tennessee border and has rivers, streams, and waterfalls that appear along 850 miles of hiking trails. The observation deck at Clingman's Dome offers spectacular views from the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and in Tennessee. Many people start their mountain getaway at the national park by visiting Gatlinburg in Sevier County which is a popular resort destination at the entrance to the national park. The largest city in the Eastern region is Knoxville which is located in the Great Appalachian Valley. The city offers a variety of activities including historical tours and outdoor adventures. The Tennessee River is formed by the convergence of the Holston River and French Broad River and passes through the downtown area of Knoxville.
