More Information About South Central Region, CO

The South Central region of Colorado is the land of contrasts. This region encompasses 29 of the 58 fourteeners (mountains 14,000 feet or higher), a 125 mile perfectly fly San Luis Valley and the Great Sand Dunes National Park.

To the North of the region lies Aspen, Colorado which is the famous ski resort and host of the annual Winter X Games for extreme winter sports enthusiasts. Another great resort in the area is on Pikes Peak located in El Paso County where people come to hike, go climbing, run the trails, or visit the ski resort.

El Paso County has several places to visit for outdoor activities including Colorado Springs, the state's second largest city. This is a good jumping off point to explore flaming-red foothills, tiny Gold Rush-era mining towns and the nearby Royal Gorge, a dramatic crevasse spanned by North America's highest suspension bridge which is 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River. Colorado Springs is situated near the base of one of the most famous American mountains, Pikes Peak, rising above 14,000 feet (4,300 m) on the eastern edge of the Southern Rocky Mountains.

The South Central region of Colorado offers activities for all seasons. Winter provides people the opportunities to snowmobile, cross country & downhill skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing. Spring and summer showcase a multitude of outdoor activities, events, sightseeing, history, culture, and relaxation. Fall sees nature explode into color, as the dark green forests become splashed with shades of yellow, red, and orange. Hunters will delight in the crossroads of three hunting units that boast an abundance of trophy elk and deer.
