Historically, the Lodge Trail was a heavily used trail by the Crow, Lakota Sioux, Northern Arapahoe and Cheyenne Indians. It provided them a view over the valleys of Piney Creek and Prairie Dog (formerly Peno) Creeks where they could observe game, and later, the European settlers as they traveled north along the Bloody Bozeman Trail to the gold mines from Fort Phil Kearney. As the European advancement became more prevalent, the Plains Indians resented it and finally made war. One of the bloodiest battles in the western frontier occurred just over the Lodge Trail where Fetterman brazenly defied orders to not go north of the Lodge Trail from the fort. His mistake cost him and all his soldiers their lives in what became known as the Fetterman Massacre. The monument for the massacre is just a mile to the East.

From the top of the Lodge Trail Ridge, one can view historical Tepee rings- evidence of a strong Plains Indian presence in the area.

North Lodge Trail land is extremely scenic, offering views north along the beautiful Bighorn Mountain front and East to the Powder River Basin. It has a very nice pond, above which would make a beautiful building site for a new home. Wild flowers are absolutely stunning on this land during the Spring and youll find numerous chokecherry trees and wild plum trees in the draws, which make nice habitat for numerous species of wildlife. You can expect to see pronghorn antelope, white-tail deer, elk in addition to occasional bears and lions. If you like upland birds, youll find sharp-tail grouse and Hungarian partridge for your enjoyment.

The current owner has installed an irrigation system to irrigate some small improved fields that have been planted to alfalfa/grass mix. The irrigation system is comprised of 9 big guns that are remotely controlled and use gravity fed water from a ditch above. This system is quite sophisticated and makes irrigation very easy on about 6 acres; however, everything under the ditch (approximately 90% of the deeded land) has an 1885 water right and could be irrigated if one wanted to do so.
